Biography

Photographer

My interest in photography began when I was in my late teens. After leaving school during the late 60’s I started an apprenticeship in the pre-press section of the printing industry. It was through this that I came into contact and had the opportunity to experience a number of allied professions. Including a marvelous trip one evening to visit a working Fleet Street darkroom. It was here watching a mixture of alchemy and black magic that the photography bug really did start to bite me hard. Although I knew that I was committed to working in the printing industry. I quickly realised photography, or to be more precise darkroom printing was going to play a big part in my life.
In the mid 70’s I moved from Ashford, Kent to Cardiff and it was here living in a succession of rented flats I first indulged my now growing passion for black and white printing. I did struggle for a number of years using “bathroom darkrooms”, but it was only when I bought my first house I was finally able to establish my first permanent darkroom.
For a many years I belong too and was a very infrequent member of Cardiff CC. Now I currently belong to Gwynfa CC, unfortunately with the same sporadic commitment.
The relentless march of Digital imaging has not passed me by as it started to have an impact on the printing industry as long ago as the early 80’s and in order for me to stay employed I found I had to embrace and learn it. As I did this I quickly realised that it held no real appeal or interest for me when it came to my own personal work. I failed to see how sitting front of a computer could replace the enjoyment and pleasure I gained from the craft element of working in a darkroom. I feel a bit like the airline pilot who flies a Tiger Moth on weekends. Both do the same job of flying but one is much more enjoyable.

Equipment has never been that important to me, I still use the same Nikon F2 and a couple of prime Nikkor lenses I bought back in 1979.

I am a member of the Royal Photographic Society and in 2000 I was awarded a Fellowship (FRPS) in the Visual Arts section for a panel of twenty monochrome darkroom prints.

My work has been regularly accepted in National and International Salons.

2011 acceptances included
London Salon
