The Prints

All my prints are produced in what these days is called a “wet” darkroom.
I print on fibre based paper and use traditional B&W printing methods of contrast and tone control. Trying to create images that are more expressive than conventional B&W images.
To do this I often Lith print, and also use a variety of toners to create the final prints.

Lith printing is a simple but alternative Black & White printing technique, using black and white negatives, a suitable black & white paper and Lith developer. It involves heavily overexposing the black and white paper and then only partially developing it in a highly diluted lith developer.

The toners I use are:

Selenium, can give anything from a warm or plum colour to a print. Dependent on the paper, dilution and the time in the toner.

Gold, despite its name gold toner produces a subtle blue tone with chlorobromide papers.

Sepia. Is the classic brown toner, varied by dilution.

Used in combination with each other a infinate variety of tones and colours can be obtained.
All are archival and increase the stability and permanence of the print.
I routinely tone B&W prints with selenium to give increased dmax and to prolong the life of the print.
